This is the first article in a six part series on how you can get indexed in the most important search engines on the internet. These search engines include Google, Yahoo, MSN, Exactseek, and Alexa. These sites cover over 80 percent of the searches done on the internet, so it’s well worth the effort to prepare your site correctly, and submit it to these search engines.

Before you do any kind of promotion on the internet, you need to make sure that your site is properly prepared for the search engines. The reason is that the search engines will be the main way that others find you on the internet.

If you haven’t optimized your site for the search engines, now is the time to do it.

There are two tools that you can use, that are absolutely free, to optimize your website. Keep in mind that your main focus should be on optimizing individual pages for various keyword terms on your topic.

Good Keywords - http://www.goodkeywords.com - This tool will tell you what others are searching for, as well as how often the search terms are searched for in a month. Windows.

Main SEO Factors For 2009

At the recent 2009 Advanced conference in Seattle Rand Fishkin, of SEOMOZ fame, gave a very informative presentation on the current factors that have been determined as most significant in the ranking of websites in the Google SERPs.

SEOMOZ have a great reputation in the search industry for the quality of their data and some neat tools available from their website. Back in 2005 they published their first series of ranking factors, collated from information gathered from people in the SEO industry. This popular publication was updated in 2007 and looks set for another update with the latest information.

Although many of the fundamentals, highlighted in 2005 and 2007, remain the same there are some notable observations based upon correlation. This time, rather than rely upon the feedback provided by notable individuals from the SEO industry, SEOMOZ have sought correlation in the search results provided by Google.

For example, although many active SEO’s say that the H1 heading tag is very important, data correlation suggests that it is far less important than is commonly believed.There are plenty of websites ranking very well for target keyterms and they are not making much use of the H1.

Contrastingly, the page title tag remains all-important. And keyword placement within the title tag is also very important with words closer to the start of the title having more significance.

Another point made by both correlation and feedback from SEO experts is that onpage keyword density is not as important as many believe. It is noted that offsite, inbound linking factors carry far more weight than onsite factors such as keyword density.

It has been estimated that offsite, inbound link related factors account for around 70% of the influence on Google search rankings and around 30% is down to onsite factors, including the domain age. Inbound links are clearly ultra-important.

One aspect of inbound links that remains signnificant is anchor text. The number of instances in which a specific anchor is used and the context in which those anchors are used is important.

Another point that is important to anyone engaged in link-building is that the diversity and number of domains providing backlinks is far more important than the number of backlinks. A site with 10,000 links from only one domain will be very weak in comparison with a site that has 10,000 links from multiple domains.

One interesting observation from correlation testing is that many of the sites that are ranking highly do not have valid markup. Many reputable websites don’t appear to be bothered by the need for validation. The basic advice was that as long as the cached version of a page matches what is to be presented to the site visitors then there shouldn’t be any problems from an SEO perspective.

What does this all mean for hands-on site optimisation? One thing is very clear and that is the need to make certain your pages present valid XHTML and CSS is really not very important.

Importantly, it highlights how backlinks from multiple domains are of high importance in getting a page to rank well in Google. So, to get a page to rank well for the term ‘Manchester Airport Parking‘ we would need to attract links from a variety of sources, each using this anchor text, or variations thereof.

Also, page titles are as important as ever so getting a page to rank for the phrase ‘Airport Parking‘ means using that phrase at the very start of the page title. Data also suggests that stuffing a page full of keyterms is a waste of time.

Interestingly data correlation indicates that the H1 tag is far less important than had previously been thought. Whereas previously we might have insisted that a pages primary keyterm is used within the page H1 heading as part of the onsite optimisation, for example the term ‘Travel Insurance‘, we may be less insistent upon this requirement.

Treat Yahoo as both a directory AND a search engine. Yahoo offers a number of different search results. Part of their search results come from an actual search engine, and some of their results come from human editors, called surfers.

Every Yahoo directory submission is viewed by a person. (Search engines use spiders and indexing software). Admission into the Yahoo directory is entirely at the discretion of the Yahoo surfer viewing your site. That’s why the free submission lead time can often be 8-10 weeks, without using the Express Submit service.

Unlike search engine submissions that accept multiple pages from the same site, Yahoo surfers prefer to view your home page, and they will navigate your site from there.

With directories, the site owner selects the most appropriate directory categories for his/her site and writes descriptions that concisely and accurately describe the content of the site. Factors that affect directory placement are selecting the right category and writing a good description.

Always differentiate between the Yahoo search engine and the Yahoo directory whenever you speak to a search engine marketer. The strategies for getting listed in search engines are different from the strategies for getting listed in directories.

Fill out the Forms on Yahoo Exactly as Requested

We know this seems obvious, but some sites don’t get listed because the submitters do not follow directions when filling out the forms. When Yahoo asks for a telephone number, give only one telephone number including the area code. When Yahoo asks for a 25-words-or-less description, don’t try any fancy word stacking or keyword tricks. Stick to a concise, accurate description of your site’s content. Yahoo surfers often change your site description after it’s listed in their directory.

Although some fields are optional, try to fill in all of the fields in the form, especially the fields asking your company name, address, and telephone and fax numbers. Yahoo wants to know that you have a legitimate business that will be around in years to come.

To select your categories, type in your selected keywords in a Yahoo query, and study the results. Your site does not belong where you believe your target audience is searching. Your site’s actual content should accurately reflect the category or categories you wish to be listed under.

You will probably be listed under the same categories your competitors are listed under. Study your competitors’ directory listing. See what their descriptions are, and then modify your site’s description to show the Yahoo surfer that you definitely belong in the categories you selected.

If you are a U.S. company, under the category Regional/United States/ in Yahoo, all 50 states are listed. You should include your site in one of the regional categories, if applicable. Don’t be surprised that most of your traffic from Yahoo is local. Many customers need to hear your voice or see your face to feel secure about hiring you or your company for a project.

Category listings are also at the discretion of a Yahoo surfer. You need to spend the time selecting your categories and studying your competitors so that you do not get listed under an “undesirable” category.

Have Unique Content and Point This Information Out in Your Submission

A web site is of no value to the Yahoo directory if the site contains the exact same information as other sites in the same categories. So to add value to the Yahoo directory, and to call attention to the unique aspects of your online business, make sure you have unique content on your site.

You can point out any unique content to the Yahoo surfer via your 25-word description or the extra comments field in the submission form.

Get a Virtual Domain Name

Yahoo tends to recognize virtual domains (http://www.yourcompany.com) over others. Why is this? Yahoo wants to have legitimate organizations and companies in their directory. They do not want a small start-up company that won’t be around next year, thus resulting in a dead link to a URL in the directory. A virtual domain shows that you are serious about your business.

Try to Get Listed in One of Yahoo’s Regional Directories First

At the bottom of Yahoo’s home page are some of Yahoo’s regional directories. If you are in one of the regional areas, you can often get your web site listed much faster in the regional directory than in Yahoo’s main directory.

Commercial web sites must pay an annual fee of $299 (currently) to be listed in the Yahoo directory. Sometimes, a Yahoo surfer might discover a content-rich commercial site without you ever submitting.

Using Subdomains To Bypass Googles Sandbox

There was apparently some talk at SES Chicago on getting a site indexed in regular results a lot quicker. This involved the use of an existing established similar domain (either one you own or one you bought) and use it to help you get a site out of the “sandbox.” The full forum post can be found here.

The technique is in the gray-to-black range. I wanted to mention that first, however if your site has been boxed for a while, this may be an alternative for you. It also requires some coding, and assumes your site is built in PHP although I would also guess there is similar ASP code out there.

First lets look at how this works: You have an established related domain and a new domain which is ‘boxed. By establishing a subdomain on the established site and mirroring the content of the new domain there you will get the new subdomain indexed more quickly because it would inherit some of the trust of the main domain.

Once it has established itself you would use some form of redirect (likely a 301) to redirect crawlers to the new domain. The new domain then inherits whatever the subdomain gained in terms of link popularity transferred from the established, trusted domain.

Sounds simple, but there are a few things you need to do.

First, obviously, is to find an established domain. If you need to buy an expired but still relevant site (and it’s in your budget) the author recommends you do so. You would also not change the registrar information, according to the author (this would be considered in that dark gray range).

You don’t want to change the registrar information because there is a chance that Google will notice the change in ownership and any trust the domain you just bought has previously earned would likely be lost.

So lets say you just bought a related domain that’s been around for a couple years and has a PageRank 5. by leaving the site intact and not changing the registrar information you are essentially ensuring the site maintains its existing stature in the engines.

Then you will create a subdomain on the site. Here you will place a mirrored copy of all your content navigation, etc. from your new site. Since the new site hasn’t been added to the index yet there will not be a duplicate content penalty.

You will also use some PHP coding to change the page header information to fool the webserver into thinking the page was created earlier than it was (the suggested PHP code is found in the forum post linked above). By telling the webserver the pages are old, you are informing the crawler that the pages are old as well.

This is because the crawler requests this information from the webserver at the time of indexing.

Because you’ve established a completely new section within an established domain the new section will get indexed sooner than the new domain.

It will inherit link popularity and trust from the parent domain allowing it to establish itself more quickly than the new site.

Once the subdomain has been fully indexed by Google you will want to redirect it to the new domain.

By doing this you have allowed the content to be found by Google which then assumes the pages are properly aged because it has been told by the webserver that the pages are in fact old (even though in reality you’ve recently created them).

By redirecting the subdomain you are then passing the inheritance and trust given to the subdomain by the main domain to the new site.

The reason this works is because the established site is already trusted by Google. Therefore the vote from the trusted site helps illustrate to Google that the new site is also trusted.

There are some things to consider with this tactic however:

Now that it’s been widely publicized I wouldn’t expect it will take that long for Google to realize the hole and patch it.

Also, the whole trustbox patent is based partly on authority but also on age. So while a page may appear old (because you’ve altered the page header served) Google may opt to instead consider the page’s age from the time it found the page. keyword elite review

In other words, even if the page is a year old, if Googlebot just found the page yesterday then it’s only 1 day old. While the patent does say that “scoring the document based, at least in part, on the inception date corresponding to the document,” it also goes on to say that Google could determine that age to be not the page date, but the date when it found the page.

And remember that like any type of blatant manipulation you risk being penalized by Google. Google engineers also visit these forums, don’t forget, so they are also keenly aware when new tactics are shared which are designed to circumvent the current algorithms.

Therefore it is their job to fix those holes, and likely also find ways to penalize the sites taking advantage of the holes. While no one can prove or disprove this theory, I’ve heard of enough sites which have been removed from the index for doing something they weren’t supposed to. keywordelite

Therefore, while this may sound like a great way to get yourself out of the ‘box early, consider the alternatives. What if you do get out of the index early but Google catches on in 3 months, 6 months or more? Do you think they may decide to “backdate” any changes to your site if they determine that you participated in such a tactic? Then, not only are you back where you started, you could be worse off than if you had just taken your lumps and done things properly.

How To Make The Most Out Of Automated Link Exchanges

One of the early problems of automated link exchanges was that when you joined such a website and submitted your link, you would instantly get hundreds or thousands of incoming links. This might sound great, at first, but that was not true for the search engines.

Reality shows that all the major SEs want to see a lot of link towards your site, but they want to see a natural link building process. When a 1,000 links are instantly directed towards your website, Google and the other search engines will see something suspicious and your web pages will not get the expected popularity and recognition.

Here are a few things that you should consider when you are using an automated link exchange website or directory:

Add your website in the right category – this is very important, as webmasters are looking for websites related to their own topics.

Don’t place your pet website in the “travel” section of the directory, as that will make it very difficult for other webmasters to find you and initiate link exchanges.

Create a well written description for your site – this is also essential, as you want webmasters looking for link exchanges to see that your website is (or wishes to become) an authority in the field. No one will want to trade links with a short, rushed description that is full of errors.

Filter out unwanted categories – your wedding related website, for example, will not benefit much from trading links with online poker websites. A great directory which allows you to filter unwanted categories of topics and only allow link exchanges with related websites is:

Allow the link exchange process to be gradual – this is important as the search engines want to see a natural link exchange pattern. Don’t rush to approve hundreds of link exchanges each day.

Take things slowly and only deal with a few dozen link exchanges each day – in the long run, this will be extremely beneficial as Google and the other search engines will consider that you are doing a quality-based exchange campaign, not a bulk links campaign.

Allow the link exchange directory to be visible – some webmasters fear that by placing their link exchange pages where their visitors can reach them they will lose traffic. Although some visitors are lost to link partners, the same number of visitors is probably gained from the links you have on other websites.

So don’t hide your link exchange pages and place a link to easily access them from most areas of your site. Your link exchange partners will notice this and this will also determine how many link exchange requests you get.

Be constant with your link exchange campaign – you will need at least a month or two of decent link exchanges to start seeing results in search engine placement and traffic numbers. How To Measure Keyword Density For Your SEO

This article will guide you through the main myths around keyword density and SEO. Even though keyword density should be a part of your SEO efforts, there is a lot of confusion about what “density” is and how to apply it properly. Also, how much is density percentage is good? This will apply to both new and existing sites, and I am covering here what to know about keyword density.

There are 2 ways of calculating density.
The basic method consists of measuring the number of times a keyword appears on the page as a percentage of the total word count of that page. The complex method consists of measuring keyword density of the page plus the text components in meta tags: Title, Keywords, Alt Text, Description, and Comments. Most SEOs refer to the first method when talking about keyword density though. But, how do search engines measure keyword density? They actually use the complex method to measure it. I will explain later how to adjust to this.

Were should the keywords be used?
Diversify the density of your keywords in different areas of your page. Starting with the Title, and following with the beginning of the page, like in the headings, other sub-headings, and in the introductory paragraphs would certainly be of benefit. Every search engine algo is different, so you must choose an average keyword density that can make your site rank well in the top ten positions in the SERPs.

The importance of keyword density.
Keyword density can be very beneficial when done right, but it can also have a very negative influence when overdone. This is known as “keyword stuffing”. When you stuff keywords in your page, this will be detected and your site will get penalized for doing so. This could go as far as getting your entire site blacklisted from a particular search engine, if you are found keyword stuffing too many times.

There is no secret keyword formula.
No matter what you may think, or read on forums or even articles by such “SEO Gurus”, there is no secret formula for keyword density. There are, however, certain guidelines that need to be followed, and they are available to the public form the search engines themselves. Keywords density is one of most critical elements in SEO, and if you can master it you get higher rankings for your site.

So what is the right keyword density?
Your keyword density must be right to improve your search engine ranking. The “ideal” keyword density will always help to achieve high rankings. But how much is too much? If too low, you will not get the maximum benefits, if too high your site might get flagged as spam… Ok, there is no “one number fits all” here, but based on real case studies, the average top ranking Google site averages basic 1.9% keyword density. I wouldn’t go over 2%. This is an average value, and I am talking about basic percentages here, not complex. But it translates well to their complex values.
